Merce Cunningham Dance Company

No dia em que chegamos a Tivoli, tivemos a oportunidade de assistir ao espetáculo da Merce Cunningham Dance Company em um teatro projetado por Frank Gehry, dentro da Universidade Bard (Richard B. Fisher Center for Perfoming Arts).

A Legacy Tour marca o fim da companhia, que vai se debandar no final desse ano e conta com os últimos bailarinos que foram treinados pessoalmente por Merce Cunningham.

O espetáculo conta com 3 danças: Suite for Five (1956-58), Antic Meet (1958) e Sounddance (1975). As duas primeiras com música de John Cage, figurino e cenografia de Robert Rauschenberg. A última Sounddance tem música de David Tudor, cenografia e figurino de Mark Lancaster.

O teatro projetado por um dos maiores arquitetos da atualidade, Frank Gehry, é muito bonito mas pouco funcional, a visão do palco de vários lugares fica comprometida, principalmente em um espetáculo de dança.

Além da oportunidade de assistir ao último espetáculo dessa companhia, estar em um teatro como este é sem dúvida uma experiência a parte: uma obra arquitetônica dessa imporância, tão distante de qualquer centro urbano, mas inserida em um complexo universitário com grande foco nas artes.

The day we got to Tivoli, we had the opportunity to watch the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in a theather designed by Frank Gehry at Bard University (The Richard B. Fisher Center for the Perfoming Arts).

The Legacy Tour seal the end of the dance company, wich will disband at the end of this year. It also counts with the last dancers trained personally by Merce Cunningham.

The show has three dances: the first two with music by John Cage and costumes and decor by Robert Rauschenberg. The last, Sounddance (1975), with music by David Tudor and decor and costumes by Mark Lancaste.

The theather designed by one of today's greatest architects, Frank Gehry, is beautiful but not so funtional. The stage view is bad from several places, especially when you are watching a dance perfomance.

Besides the opportunity to see the last tour of the company, being in a place like this, is no doubt a single experience: an architectural work of this importance, far from any urban center, but in a university focused in arts.
