Hallgrimskirkja

Um dos pontos turísticos e de referência mais importantes de Reykjavík é a catedral Hallgrimskirkja. É de lá que se tem uma das vistas mais bonitas da cidade (e foi lá que fomos!), a torre tem 74.5 metros e é a sexta contrução mais alta da Islândia.
Inspirado pelas formações de basalto encontradas em todo o país o arquiteto, Guðjón Samúelsson desenhou a igreja em 1937, mas a construção só começou em 1945 e levou 38 anos para ser concluídas!
Localizada no alto de uma suave colina, em uma área enorme, a construção toda em concreto com suas formas geométricas é realmente linda. O interior segue a mesma linha, em um estilo quase "gótico clean". Um orgão gigante com 5275 tubos foi construído pelo alemão, Johannes Klais em 1992.
Vale citar também que a Islândia, possui uma religião própria e que é predominante
na população, a Igreja Luterana Islandesa.
Em frente a catedral, há uma estátua do explorador viking Leif Eriksson (filho do descobridor e fundador da Islândia, Erik, o ruivo), que dizem ter sido o primeiro europeu a chegar na América...muito antes de Cristovão Colombo!

One of the important landmarks in Reykjavík is the Hallgrimskirkja cathedral. It has one of the most beautiful city views (that´s where we went!), the tower has 74.5 meters and it is the sixth tallest building in Iceland.
Inspired by the basalt formations found throughout the country, the architect Guðjón Samúelsson, designed the church in 1937, but the construction only began in 1945 and took 38 years to be concluded!
Located on the top of a little hill, in a huge area, the concrete building with its geometric shapes is really beautiful. The interior follows the same aesthetic, in an almost "clean gothic" style... A huge organ was built with 5275 pipes by the
german Johannes Klais in 1992.
It is worth mentioning that Iceland has a religion that is predominant in the population, the Icelandic Lutheran Church.
In front of the cathedral, there is a statue of Leif Eriksson, a viking explorer (son of the discoverer and founder of Iceland, Erik the Red) said to be the first European to reach America...long before Columbus!
