When we were tracing our road trip through Iceland and decided we were going to the big glacier, Vatnajökull, we needed somewhere to sleep. Searching for a place on the internet, we found some hotels and hostels, but a guesthouse on a farm caught our attention. So, we wrote an e-mail and a few hours later we got the answer that we would be welcome there!
After 560 kilometers traveled in one day, we arrived in Hólmur by night and had a pleasing surprise! We were welcomed by the couple Magnus and Gudrun, the farm owners. The farm is in Magnus' family for a while now and the place where we stayed was his home for many years. Super cozy and comfortable, we were the only guests - usually tourists visit Iceland during the summer.
After a whole day of traveling we were tired and hungry. There was nothing better than a delicious dinner, a glass of wine and a warm place to sleep. The dinner prepared by Gudrun was really special, bread baked by herself, mushroom soup and a very good codfish with tomato sauce, cabbage and potatoes.
When the sun rose and the first snow of the winter fell, we could really see the beauty of the place. Through the windows we could see the glacier, the mountains and big fields, where hopefully you can see wild reindeers running around aimlessly.
