In one of the hotels we stayed, hotel Rangá, we met Ingi, the friendly manager who told us some stories, including the reason for the name Iceland.
Erik, the red, a famous and powerful viking, was banished from his land, Norway, after killing another viking. He had two choices, leave or be killed. Believing that the earth was flat, Erik went westward aimlessly. When he arrived in what is now Iceland, he thought it was so amazing and beautiful that he would not share it with anyone else, so putting the name Iceland, would not attract people to the place. A good marketing gimmick!
Many years later, his son Leif Eriksson, also went to the west, searching for a new land. After a long time he arrived in Greenland. All he saw there was ice, ice and ice. Smarter then his father, he really needed people there. With a name like Greenland, he was sure people would come!
All we want, unlike Erik the red, is to share and show everyone, the beautiful landscapes we saw!
