Logo na saída da estação de metrô que chegaConey Island você já dá de cara com o Nathan´s. A famosa esquina funciona desde 1916 e desde então já serviu cachorro-quente para milhares de pessoas, incluindo Al Capone, o presidente Roosevelt que ofereceu para o rei e a rainha da Inglaterra, Barbra Streisand, Jacqueline (quando ainda era) Kennedy e muitas outras.
É por lá também que acontece uma competição de quem come mais cachorro-quente e por incrível que pareça, os atuais ganhadores Joey Chestnut e Sonya Thomas conseguiram comer 62 e 40 respectivamente!
Apesar de que hoje em dia você pode encontrar a marquinha verde em vários outros lugares, com certeza não será a mesma coisa. Talvez a brisa do mar, a multidão, a história...alguma coisa faz com que o salsicha/linguiça crocante por fora, macia por dentro com pão, ketchup e mostarda, acompanhada da batata e os garfinhos vermelhos deixe de ser apenas um cachorro-quente para se tornar "o melhor cachorro-quente".
Assim como a Patti Smith e o Robert Mapplethorpe, eu e a Anninha fomos até Coney Island passear e comer no Nathan´s Famous.
Just outside the subway station at Coney Island you already see Nathan's on the corner. The famous fast food restaurant exists since 1916 and has served hot dogs for thousands of people, including Al Capone, President Roosevelt who offered it to the king and queen of England, Barbra Streisand, Jacqueline (when she was) Kennedy and many others.
It´s there where the Hot Dog Eating Contests happens and believe it or not the current winners, Joey Chestnut and Sonya Thomas succeeded eat 62 and 40 respectively!
Even if today you can find the green logo in many other places, it is certainly not the same. Perhaps it´s the sea air, the crowd, the history... something makes the crunchy outside, soft inside sausage with bread, ketchup and mustard, accompanied by fries and the red little forks no longer be a regular hot dog to become "the best hot dog".
